JOB TITLE: SUBSTITUTE INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High School Diploma or GED Certificate.
  2. Previous experience working with children preferred.
  3. Has met the requirements of a criminal record check as specified by Kentucky State law and other requirements as specified in district policy.
  4. Must demonstrate and/or develop skills to operate office and educational equipment.
  5. Demonstrates competent language skills.
  6. Used on an as needed basis.

REPORTS TO: Supervising teacher and principal.

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  1. Basic subjects taught in the District schools, including arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language and reading.
  2. Safe practices in classroom and playground activities.
  3. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
  4. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
  5. Basic record-keeping techniques.

ABILITY TO:

  1. Learn child guidance principles and practices.
  2. Communicate and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, staff and the public.
  3. Perform routine clerical duties in support of classroom activities.
  4. Print and write legibly.
  5. Add, subtract, multiply and divide accurately.
  6. Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  7. Learn procedures, functions and limitations of assigned duties.
  8. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  9. Learn to apply and explain policies and procedures related to school and program activities.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Maintains confidentiality of records and all information concerning students and classroom activities; refers all questions to teacher or principal.
  2. Is punctual and prepared for immediate assumption of duties upon arrival at school, utilizes time appropriately and maintains good attendance
  3. Reports to work promptly and on a regular basis and maintains continuity of instruction throughout the school year.
  4. Attends appropriate professional development meetings.
  5. Consistently projects a positive attitude toward the school and community.
  6. Assists with the administration of the classroom assessments which will be scored by the teacher for use in instructional planning.
  7. Assists in large-group instruction.
  8. Assists children with self-care activities as needed, i.e., feeding and toileting (diapering when necessary).
  9. Tutors, without direct supervision, both individually and with small groups of children.
  10. Assists in reviewing home and seat work activities.
  11. Assists children with oral and written communication, make-up work, and hands-on activities.
  12. Observes and records student behavior, assists in behavior management systems designed by the teacher to meet individual student needs; reinforces positive behavior of students.
  13. Participates in reading and story-telling activities.
  14. Assists the teacher with helping each child develop socially, emotionally, cognitively, and physically at his/her own rate.
  15. Collects and prepares materials and manages displays, teaching centers, and similar instructional activities.
  16. Records written materials for children who have visual or physical disabilities.
  17. Helps children solve personal conflicts with other children.
  18. Is familiar with fire and tornado exit procedures and crisis policies, and assists with implementation as necessary.
  19. Works with audio-visual equipment, copying machines, etc.
  20. Assists in classroom organization and management.
  21. Assists on instructional field trips.
  22. Assists certified persons in implementing all policies and regulations governing student conduct for the classroom and related school activities.
  23. Assists on instructional field trips.
  24. Administer health services to students as necessary, including, but not limited to, the administration of medication; the operation, maintenance, or health care through the use of medical equipment; or the administration of clinical procedures.
  25. Performs other duties as assigned.
