TITLE:  BUS MONITOR FOR EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN

 

JOB GOALTo assist in providing safe transportation so that students may enjoy the fullest possible advantage from the district’s curriculum and extracurricular program.

 

 

REPORTS TO:  Director of Transportation.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. High School diploma or GED Certificate. 
  2. Hold a valid drivers’ license. 
  3. Some positions in this class may be required to learn basic sign language.
  4. Must meet the requirements of a criminal record check as specified by Kentucky State Law.
  5. Must meet health requirements as specified in district personnel policy.




KNOWLEDGE OF:

  1. Operation of mechanical lift, wheel chairs, seat belts, restraining harnesses and wheelchair clamping devices.
  2. Safe practices concerning school bus transportation.
  3. Problems and concerns of students with special needs.
  4. Basic record-keeping techniques.
  5. Applicable sections of the Kentucky Administration Regulations and other applicable laws.
  6. Health and safety regulations.




ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assist school bus drivers in maintaining discipline while the bus is in operation ensuring safety of students.
  2. Maintain proper records and documentation.
  3. Assist student loading, unloading and seating arrangements as required.
  4. Understand and relate to children with special needs.
  5. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  6. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  7. Lift students according to established guidelines.
  8. Maintain current knowledge of Emergency Evacuation procedures.
  9. Maintain routine records.
  10. Observe health and safety regulations.




PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assist exceptional children on and off the bus and escort children across the street upon return home; lift children as required; assure responsible adults meets students leaving the bus.
  2. Operate equipment, such as wheelchairs, tie-downs, seat belts, harnesses, mechanical lift and other adaptive equipment as necessary.
  3. Assist drivers in assuring seat belts, harnesses and wheelchair clamps are secured as required.
  4. Assist parents and school personnel with safe loading and unloading of students; coordinate seating of exceptional students as required by state transportation guidelines.
  5. Attend in-service meetings and training courses as assigned.
  6. Monitor and assist students while the bus is in operation.
  7. Maintain current knowledge of emergency evacuation procedures.
  8. Communicate with classroom aides, teachers, principals, and parents concerning student background, medical problems and behavior as appropriate.



Work Environment:

 

Typical outdoor environment and inside the bus, exposed to sounds and noise levels that could be distracting or uncomfortable.  May be exposed to contaminants and diseases and infections carried by school children.  Will be required to work indoors assisting with lunch room duties.

  • Exposed to vibration, frequently exposed to fumes, odors or airborne particles, toxins or caustic chemicals.
  • Exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, and outside weather conditions year-round.
  • Noise level is usually moderate to loud

 

 

EVALUATION:

 Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on the Classified Evaluation Plan. The evaluation will be conducted by the Transportation Coordinator and Principal.

 

Terms of Employment: 

  1. Classified salary schedule
  2. Classified benefits package
  3. FLSA Classification: Non-exempt
  4. Hours per day: 182
  5. Days per year: 4.5
