JOB TITLE:  INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT II (SPECIAL ED)

 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  1. Associate Degree, Minimum of 48 credited college hours or Pass a state approved test.
  2. Previous experience working with children with disabilities preferred.
  3. Demonstrates competent language skills.
  4. Must be capable of working with students who may have physical, intellectual, emotional and/or behavioral exceptionalities.
  5. Participates in program training as specified by Kentucky Department of Education and local district including certification in safe crisis management when required.
  6. Has met the requirements for a criminal record check and other requirements as specified in district personnel policy.
  7. Must demonstrate and/or develop skills to operate office and/or assistive equipment for disabled students.
  8. Must be able to lift and assist students in wheelchairs as needed during times of transfer from chair to floor, toilet, etc.

 

 

 

KNOWLEDGE OF: 

  1. Basic subjects taught in the District schools, including arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language and reading.
  2. Safe practices in classroom and playground activities.
  3. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
  4. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
  5. Basic record-keeping techniques. 

 

 

 

ABILITY TO: 

  1. Learn child guidance principles and practices.
  2. Communicate and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, staff and the public including members of ethnic communities.
  3. Perform routine clerical duties in support of classroom activities.
  4. Print and write legibly.
  5. Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  6. Learn procedures, functions and limitations of assigned duties.
  7. Communicate effectively both orally and writing.
  8. Learn to apply and explain policies and procedures related to school and program activities.
  9. Work cooperatively with others.
  10. Monitor, observe and report student behavior according to approved policies and procedures.
  11. Operate instructional and office equipment and assist students with assistive devices as needed.

 

 

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  1. Maintains confidentiality of records and all information concerning students and classroom activities; refers all questions to teacher or principal.
  2. Is punctual and prepared for immediate assumption of duties upon arrival at school, utilizes time appropriately and maintains good attendance.
  3. Reports to work promptly and on a regular basis and maintains continuity of instruction throughout the school year.
  4. Attends appropriate professional development meetings.
  5. Consistently projects a positive attitude toward the school and community.
  6. Conducts classroom or community-based instruction as needed under the direction and supervision of the teacher.
  7. Assists with the administration of the classroom assessments which will be scored by the teacher for use in instructional planning.
  8. Assists in adaptive physical education and other fine and gross motor activities as needed under teacher direction and supervision.
  9. Assists children with self-care activities as needed, i.e., feeding and toileting (diapering when necessary).
  10. Assists in large-group instruction.
  11. Tutors, without direct supervision, both individually and with small groups of children.
  12. Assists in reviewing home and seat work activities.
  13. Assists children with oral and written communication, make-up work, and hands-on activities.
  14. Observes and records student behavior, assists in behavior management systems designed by the teacher to meet individual student needs; reinforces positive behavior of students.
  15. Participates in reading and story-telling activities.
  16. Assists the teacher with helping each child develop socially, emotionally, cognitively, and physically at his/her own rate.
  17. Collects and prepares materials and manages displays, teaching centers, and similar instructional activities.
  18. Records written materials for children who have visual or physical disabilities.
  19. Helps children solve personal conflicts with other children.
  20. Is familiar with fire and tornado exit procedures and crisis policies, and assists with implementation as necessary.
  21. Works with audio-visual equipment, copying machines, etc.
  22. Assists in classroom organization and management.
  23. Assists students with appropriate bus behavior when assigned to ride a special education bus; assists on instructional field trips.
  24. Provides health care services as delegated by the school nurse.
  25. Assists certified persons in implementing all policies and regulations governing student conduct for the classroom and related school activities.
  26. Administer health services to students as necessary, including, but not limited to, the administration of medication; the operation, maintenance, or health care through the use of medical equipment; or the administration of clinical procedures.
