TITLE:                           SUBSTITUTE SCHOOL NURSE, RN

 

CLASSIFICATION:       SUBSTITUTE SCHOOL NURSE, RN

 

 

JOB GOAL:  Administer basic first aid procedures and screen ill or injured children in accordance with  State laws and District regulations; conduct a variety of health screenings; prepare and maintain accurate student medical record, files and reports ON AN AS NEEDED BASIS ONLY.

 

REPORTS TOPrincipal – District Nurse

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

 

  1. Any combination equivalent to:  Graduation as a Registered Nurse and one year comprehensive nursing experience.
  2. Valid First Aid and CPR Certificate issued by an authorized agency.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

 

  1. First Aid, age-appropriate CPR and nursing practices and procedures.
  2. Various health-screening practices, procedures and techniques.
  3. Oral and written communication skills.
  4. Record-keeping techniques.
  5. Policies and objectives of assigned program and activities.
  6. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
  7. Health and safety regulations.
  8. Contagious diseases.

 

ABILITY TO:

 

  1. Administer first aid according to established procedures.
  2. Conduct variety of health screenings.
  3. Prepare and maintain accurate student medical records.
  4. Make referrals and perform follow-up.
  5. Maintain medical equipment in proper working condition.
  6. Understand and follow written prescriptions.
  7. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  8. Establish and maintain cooperative effective working relationships with others.
  9. Maintain current knowledge of technological advances in the field.
  10. Complete work with many interruptions.
  11. Determine appropriate action within clearly defined guidelines.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

 

  1. Administer first aid or nursing care for accidents, seizures, preventive medicine and other educational-related medical problems; provide CPR and first aid to school employees as needed.
  2. Conduct height, weight, vision, hearing, scoliosis and other health screenings as required; provide screening for head lice and observe students on a regular basis to detect health needs.
  3. Refer students to appropriate personnel, resources or clinics and follow-up as necessary.
  4. Maintain health records and medical logs; update immunization and student records as needed; prepare and submit periodical medical reports for appropriate organizations or District personnel and assure compliance with established laws and regulations.
  5. Dispense and retain medication and perform medical treatment in accordance with physician’s instructions within District guidelines.
  6. Communicate with various community health agencies and civic organizations to exchange information, coordinate activities and obtain student needs such as medication, glasses, hearing aides and clothing as needed.
  7. Conduct training for students, parents and school staff as required.
  8. Provide information and make recommendations to principals, substitutes, teachers and parents regarding health issues of students and school health program needs, develop programs to meet school health needs.
  9. Make home visits as required; authorize re-admissions to school.
  10. Maintain stock of first aid supplies; assure medical equipment is in proper working condition; order supplies and equipment as needed.
  11. Participate in screening for health defects and sanitary conditions in schools.
  12. Maintain current knowledge of medical advances and information, public health issues and treatment procedures.
  13. Administer health services to students as necessary, including, but not limited to, the administration of medication; the operation, maintenance, or health care through the use of medical equipment; or the administration of clinical procedures.
  14. Perform related duties as assigned.
  15. Acts in accordance with the by-laws and policies as set forth by the Owensboro Board of Education, KRS and KAR, and applicable Federal laws and regulations.
  16. Demonstrates loyalty and dedication to the purposes and goals of the Owensboro Public Schools.
  17. Performs other duties as assigned.
